What is Solar Thermal?
Solar Thermal Hot Water Heating systems, sometimes also called Solar Energy Hot Water Heating systems, harness the sun's radiation through glazed solar panels to provide a sustainable means of producing hot water.
This system should not be confused with Solar ‘Power' or Solar PV, where photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electric current using the photoelectric effect.
7 Energy supply two types of Solar Energy Hot Water Heating systems using highly advanced glazed flat plate 'collectors', normally installed within the roof or mounted on the roof. (see our Solar Thermal products)
Economical and energy efficient
7 Energy's solar panel hot water heating systems are very cost effective. The production of solar water heating panels is now a mature technology, which is becoming increasingly more affordable and extremely economical, especially when integrated with our energy efficient biomass boilers. This is because less fuel is used to produce hot water as the sun has already pre-warmed it. (see Complete Heating Systems)
Solar Thermal installation from 7 Energy can qualify for funding, available through the UK Government's Renewable Heat Incentive scheme, see below. Homeowners, businesses and community schemes can benefit in two ways:
- Saving energy costs and reducing your carbon footprint: Solar Thermal hot water heating systems have almost no running costs at all, just a small amount of electricity is used by the pump to circulate the water, so if your central heating and water is heated by gas, coal, oil, logs or electricity you will start saving money from day one. Solar energy is also an infinitely renewable energy source and a solar thermal system has a much lower overall carbon footprint than other fuels.
- Saving money through the Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme: The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is the world’s first long-term financial support programme for renewable heat. The UK Government launched the RHI in November 2011 with a scheme for the non-domestic sector that provides payments to industry, businesses and public sector organisations. They have now set out plans for providing longer term support for homeowners in ‘Renewable Heat Incentive: the first step to transforming the way we heat our homes’.
The Government plan to open the household scheme in spring 2014, but in the meantime domestic customers should read their guide on the Renewable Heat Premium Payment scheme for details of the householder voucher scheme that is currently available. The RHPP scheme has been extended for a further year to March 2014 to provide continued support for households until the domestic RHI is introduced.
The RHI pays participants of the scheme that generate and use renewable energy to heat their buildings. By increasing the generation of heat from renewable energy sources (instead of fossil fuels), the RHI helps the UK reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet targets for reducing the effects of climate change.
The RHI is the main scheme of the UK Government's heat strategy.
You can find out more about the RHI Scheme for non-domestic and domestic users at the Gov.UK website or you can visit the Energy Saving Trust website and select the UK region that is relevant for your location.
For these reasons, a solar thermal system from 7 Energy represents an excellent long-term investment, providing you with a good return and reliable hot water heating, without the absolute reliance upon national energy suppliers, for years to come.
