What is Small Wind Power - Micro Wind Generation?

Wind power micro generation is the use of small wind turbines that convert wind energy into electricity. Put simply, the wind rotates the blades on the turbine, and the rotational energy is converted by a generator into a form we can use in our homes, outbuildings, offices and schools - wherever electrical power is used. The stronger the wind, the more electricity is produced.
This renewable electricity replaces the electricity that would normally have been purchased from your energy supplier, which would have been generated in conventional power stations running on gas, oil, coal or nuclear fuels. This will thereby reduce your energy costs and help the environment.
When it is very windy, or when there is a low electricity demand in the building, the electricity production may be greater than is required or used. Modern small wind turbine systems are designed to export any excess electricity back into the grid, earning additional revenue for the user.

All wind turbine installations that generate less than 5 megawatts of power qualify for the Feed-in-Tariff, which means most households and business properties in the UK. What does a small wind turbine system consist of?
A system consists of three elements:
- A wind turbine, mast mounted in a suitably exposed position
- An inverter (an electronic device that converts the electrical output of the wind power into AC so it can be fed into the mains)
- Cables, display and switchgear (that connect the wind turbine to the inverter and the inverter to the property's mains supply)
How does a wind turbine work?
Wind power is an old concept but one of the most sustainable ways to generate energy. From the sailing ships of ancient civilisations to the windmills of Holland and the wind driven water pumps of the USA; we've harnessed the natural energy of the wind over millennia.
Today we use wind turbines in a similar way - to harvest energy.
A wind turbine consists of large blades, which are aerodynamically designed to catch the wind as it passes over their surface. Acting like an aeroplane propeller in reverse, the wind rotates the blades, which turns a shaft connected to an electrical generator.
The blades are automatically kept at the optimum direction to the oncoming wind by a wind vane, which is situated at the rear of the housing unit that surrounds the generator.
Electrical energy is generated by the turbine as direct current (DC), which is then converted to useable alternating current (AC) by an inverter.
Wind turbine performance
Properly situated, a wind turbine is a more effective generator of electricity than any other form of renewable power generation.
Savings: In addition to earning money from the Feed-in-Tariff and savings from buying less electricity, a typical wind turbine will save approximately 5.6 tonnes of CO2 every year. That is 113 tonnes over the 20-year lifespan of a turbine.

Wind turbine output: A small wind turbine from 7 Energy can generate 13,186kWh per year with an annual wind speed of 6m/s. This could generate an income from the Feed-in-Tariff and savings on energy bills of over £4,500 per year - for up to 20 years.
